What is Taekwon-Do?
At our schools in Livingston (West Lothian), Wishaw (North Lanarkshire), and Uddingston (South Lanarkshire), we proudly teach ITF Taekwon-Do, following the traditional style founded by General Choi Hong-Hi.
ITF Taekwon-Do is a traditional style of Taekwon-Do founded by General Choi Hong-Hi in 1955. It stands for the International Taekwon-Do Federation, which was officially established in 1966 to promote and spread this martial art worldwide.
🥋 What Makes ITF
Taekwon-Do Unique?
1. Traditional Martial Art Focus
- Strong emphasis on discipline, etiquette, and self-development
- Includes patterns (called “tuls”)—a series of choreographed movements that represent historical and philosophical ideas
2. Scientific Approach
- Techniques are based on physics and biomechanics (e.g., using body weight and angles for maximum power)
- Features the “sine wave motion”—a rising and falling movement to increase power
3. Structured System
- Divided into 10 colored belts (gup ranks) and 9 black belt degrees (dan ranks)
- Students progress through step-by-step curriculum including patterns, self-defense, sparring, and theory
4. Sparring & Self-Defense
- Uses semi-contact sparring (controlled techniques)
- Focuses on self-defense applications, not just sport
5. Philosophy & Values
Students are taught the 5 Tenets of Taekwon-Do:
✅ Courtesy
✅ Integrity
✅ Perseverance
✅ Self-Control
✅ Indomitable Spirit
